On the occasion of the conference L’art et l’hospitalité: le pouvoir des représentations at the École Normale Supérieure of Paris, Alioune Diagne will take part in a conversation between artists from 2.15pm to 3.15pm on Monday, June 17, 2024. Admission is free, subject to availability.
Hospitality is an ancient and indeed anthropological value. So it’s hardly surprising that many people are interested in a legal, practical, social, artistic and political notion that is at the heart of contemporary concerns.
From the “Wir schaffen das!” (“We get there”) pronounced by Angela Merkel in 2015 when she decided to open the borders to tens of thousands of refugees on the Balkan route, to the folds of companies on themselves, the stakes are immense.
The notion deserves to be questioned on the basis of its historical, legal, social and practical content in order to understand, from an emblematic project, that of NAVIRE AVENIR, originally conceived by an artistic collective, how art can make it possible to make, or remake, society.

The artist
Born in 1985 in Kaffrine, Senegal, Alioune Diagne lives and works between Senegal and France. Former Beaux-Arts student in Dakar, he immediately distinguished himself by founding in 2013 an unique mode of expression. Composed of a figurative created from an infinite number of tiny unique element, Diagne's work challenges by its complexity and the dynamism of its scenes which depict the daily life of the black community and the African diaspora through the world. At the age of 38 he thus lays the groundwork for deep reflection on current issues as the ecology, the place of women in society, the racism and the notion of transmission or heritage.
In April 2024, the artist will have the honor of representing his country on the Senegalese Pavilion at 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.
