The Museum of Art, Kochi, Japan
From Sunday 7th July to Monday 23th September 2013 Our next exhibition will feature new works by Chiharu Shiota, an artist who is the focus of attention in art circles all over the world. Born in Osaka, Chiharu Shiota is currently based in Berlin, Germany. Deemed a young artistic master with artworks of epic proportions, she actively creates new works in various countries, and her next move constantly attracts much attention. Her roots lie in Kochi’s Ogata Town (current Kuroshio Town)—her parents’ hometown—and her memories of the many childhood summers spent here were the catalyst for her creation of art. (…)
Casa Asia, Barcelona, Spain
From October 23th 2012 to March 30th 2013 Shiota’s installations produce their own spaces, where hundreds of invisible threads that bond us to things can be seen. In these domestic scenarios she proposes, threads become bridges between a bride’s dress and the absent subject, a piano, suitcases and a mirror. In her work, these threads are veins with tears, fear for abyss, life and death; threads that are plots of particular and universal stories, interweaving like the inverted roots of a tree, just like a rhizome through multiple branches that hold up the relationship between I and the world. (…)

From October 5th 2012 to January 24th 2013
Francis Bacon and the Existential Condition in Contemporary Art, an exhibition co-curated by Franziska Nori (Director of the CCC Strozzina) and Barbara Dawson (Director of the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane), will be presenting work by contemporary artists who exam today’s existential state of societal mind. Their work explores the kind of questions man asks himself in his relationship with his own interior being, his body and the outside world.

From May 24th to July 31th 2012 THE BEST OF TIMES, THE WORST OF TIMES – REBIRTH AND APOCALYPSE IN CONTEMPORARY ART Echoing the first words of A Tale of Two Cities (1859), Charles Dickens’ famous novel set at the time of the French Revolution, this exhibition jumps forward to the present to consider how contemporary art and aesthetics use the past to express the future. The ideals of Human Rights developed during 18th Century European Enlightenment found their first political expression in the American and French Revolutions. Combining ideology with action, these initiated a continuing wave of national uprisings that still continue to form the world. Yet in spite of good intentions Human Rights have been constricted and each revolution has contained at its core the worst as well as the best of human thought and action. This exhibition reflects on utopian dreams of freedom, equality, and security that are very much at the heart of our lives today, as well as on their opposite: terror, inequity and war. It is the destructive forces of both man and nature that seem to make a more ideal life impossible. (…)
