The exhibition “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime” presents 150 haute-couture and prêt-à-porter outfits by a visionary couturier, director, photographer, perfumer and dancer – almost none of which have ever been exhibited – in addition to accessories, stage costumes, videos, rarely seen sketches, and archival material. Numerous art prints by leading fashion photographers, from Helmut Newton to David LaChapelle, round out the show.
REGGIA DI VENARIA - CITRONIERA, TURIN, ITALY From 14/06/2019 to 06/01/2019
The exhibition Atti Divini (acts of god), curated by Denis Curti and Reiner Opoku, presents 70 of the most significant and emblematic works of the artist’s career. The exhibition proposes a set of large and very large works. These are the most iconic and significant works of La Chapelle that have contributed to making him one of the most influential artists in the world.
NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, LONDON, UK From 28/06/2018 to 21/10/2018
This landmark exhibition explores the influence of Michael Jackson on some of the leading names in contemporary art, spanning several generations of artists across all media. Curated by Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, the exhibition will open in the summer of 2018 to coincide with what would have been Michael Jackson’s 60th birthday (on August 29, 2018). With among others Andy Warhol, David Hammons, David LaChapelle, Kehinde Wiley, Glenn Ligon.
GRONINGER MUSEUM, GRONINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS From 20/04/2018 to 28/10/2018
‘LaChapelle: Good News for Modern Man’ will feature an expansive survey of work by David LaChapelle, offering over 70 pieces from various periods of the artist’s career. As a part of the opening night events, renowned ballet dancer Sergei Polunin will give a performance in the Martini Church in Groningen. His first large-scale solo museum show in the Netherlands will highlight areas of the artist’s oeuvre, from portraiture, still life, landscapes and tableaux. This comprehensive survey also introduces LaChapelle’s latest series, New World, in which he attempts to photograph the unphotographable – in a future quest for paradise. Opening April 20th, 2018 from 8 to 10pm.
MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS DE MONS, MONS, BELGIUM
From 10/28/2017 to 02/25/2018
BAM is to host, for the first time in Belgium, one of the largest and most important retrospectives ever dedicated to the great American photographer David LaChapelle. The exhibition looks back over his entire artistic output from the 1990s to the present day.
After many years with the biggest stars of his generation as his subject matter, the artist began a new creative chapter with a series of more personal pieces highlighting his concerns regarding ecological and ethical issues affecting the world.
More than 100 photographs will be exhibited – some in large format – touching on all aspects of his prolific output, together
with music videos he has produced for well-known pop and rock singers.
CASA DEI TRE OCI, VENICE, ITALYFrom 4/12/2017 to 9/10/2017
Casa dei Tre Oci, a splendid example of early 20th-century Venetian architecture, welcomes a major retrospective of David LaChapelle, gathering around 100 works by the American photographer, including the never seen before new series New World.
NRW FORUM, DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY From 11/19/2016 to 1/15/2017
New trends in photography: the exhibition “Bling Bling Baby” will present the new, colourful world of photography. From Glam Fashion to nature poems, from the ironic representation to pop portraits – the past few years have seen the emergence of a fascinating canon of images which celebrate the artificial and do not shy away from kitsch. David LaChapelle and Pierre et Gilles successfully continued this flirt with pop. The international group exhibition, curated by Nadine Barth, combines the most interesting new approaches from the field of photography, it introduces new and familiar names and carries us off to a sweet, surreal, glittering and incredibly fresh cosmos.
EDWARD HOPPER HOUSE ART CENTER, NYACK, NY, USADu 07/09/2016 au 09/11/2016
Renowned photographer David LaChapelle will exhibit six large-scale photographs from his Gas Stations series. Inspired in part by Edward Hopper’s painting Gas (1940), LaChapelle created scale models using common, found objects, which he then photographed on location in the rainforest of Maui. The natural landscape of the rainforest envelops the fabricated structures of the gas stations, acting at once as a generative force and a destructive one. The work is a commentary on our reliance on fossil fuels and “the absurdity of our attempts to harness nature.”
