Pierre et Gilles

The artist

Pierre was born in 1950 in La Roche-Sur-Yon, Gilles in Le Havre in 1953. They are internationally renowned artists who have been producing works together since 1976, creating a world where painting and photography meet. Their art is peopled by their friends and family, anonymous and famous, who appear in sophisticated life-size sets the artists build in their studio. They meticulously apply paint to the photographs once printed on canvas. Accomplished image creators, Pierre and Gilles have built up an extraordinary contemporary iconography on the frontier between art history and popular culture.

The exhibition Mirror Mirror takes the form of a series of chapters and aims to bridge the microscopic gap separating our image from our being. Our reflection is utterly specific, making it undoubtedly the most complex of all images. In it, recognition and illusion are confused, giving rise to an inner disorder linked to our constant desire to read our identity here. Each chapter tackles a specific theme relating to the mirror or reflections, and presents an array of design objects, complemented by others from the worlds of contemporary art and photography. Artists, whether famous or emerging, offer their take on the idea which, on the frozen surface of the window, now defines our being in the world.

CLAIR-OBSCUR – SOLO SHOW

From 27 May to 20 August 2017, the Andre Malraux Museum of Modern Art (MuMa) in Le Havre, where Gilles was born, will be giving carte blanche to Pierre & Gilles for the second stage of a major retrospective held in collaboration with the Museum of Ixelles in Brussels (which will be hosting a Pierre & Gilles exhibition from 16 February to 14 May 2017). MuMa’s exhibition will consist of over 80 works belonging to large museums and prestigious private collections, produced between the late 1970s and the present. Many of the images have acquired iconic status. Grouped by theme, they make up a sumptuous visual corpus. Pierre & Gilles have also dreamed up an installation especially for the setting of MuMa. It will be based on the beach huts that are a typical feature of Le Havre and will be displayed in the main concourse of the museum. On the ground floor, they will create a new display by delving into the treasure-trove of the museum’s collections. And to highlight the couple’s Le Havre back-story, a “cabinet of curiosities” will present a set of unusual personal objects, juvenile drawings and art works and paintings by local artists, arranged in Pierre & Gilles’ inimitable style. LE BAISER DANS L’ART DE RODIN à WANG DU – GROUP SHOW

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Rodin’s death, the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Calais pays tribute to the great master of French sculpture with an exhibition focusing on the most famous theme of his work: The Kiss! Through the eyes of international artists – including Rodin, Brancusi, Picasso, Le Corbusier, Jacques Monory, Ange Leccia, Douglas Gordon, Orlan, Pierre et Gilles… and a diversity of media and artistic disciplines (painting, sculpture, installation, cartoon, street art, cinema, photography, video), the exhibition aims to show the evolution of this theme in art, since the creation of The Kiss by Rodin in 1887. The artworks question the image the image and expression of a new reality. The featured artists all approach The Kiss primarily as a language. Between myth and reality, between codes and protocols of yesterday, today and tomorrow, they (re)think the relation to the Other.

On the 9th of March 2017, the Cultural Institute Bernard Magrez, leading centre for arts and culture in Bordeaux, pays tribute to Daniel Templon through an important exhibition organised at the Château Labottière. With over 600 exhibitions and 250 artists, the world-renowned French galerist, always knew to pay particular attention to the artistic avant-garde. The exhibition, portrays Daniel Templon, pioneer and major figure of the art world, featuring five major artists of his gallery, offering different artistic styles: Philippe Cognée, Jan Fabre, Pierre et Gilles, Yue Minjun and Chiharu Shiota.

From Narrative Figuration to the hardcore graphics of Bazooka, from Les Editions Champ Libre to the first «radios libres» (a form of pirate radio), from Hara-Kiri to Bérurier Noir, the exhibition looks at the formation of a critical, irreverent, dissenting «French spirit» by proposing a multitude of crossovers and affinities. Through some sixty artists and over seven hundred works and documents, spanning newspapers, flyers, posters, and extracts from films, videos and television shows, it purposely looks to other creative «genres» than those generally in the spotlight of contemporary art.

PIERRE ET GILLES ’40 YEARS’ – PUBLICATION

Already 40 years: It was in 1976 when the photographer Pierre Commoy met Gilles Blanchard, a painter from Beaux-Art in Paris, and when they start their four-handed oeuvre on the boarders between painting and photography. Under the name of Pierre and Gilles, art cannot be dissociated from personal issues or intimacy. In order to celebrate this anniversary, the artistes chose to publish a book presenting year by year like in an album. Published in October by Flammarion, the book offers 350 illustrations, including never published photographs and a sophisticated text by Éric Troncy. Pierre and Gilles (born in 1950 in La Roche-sur-Yon and in 1953 in Le Havre) are once again delighting the world with their superb heroes from mythology, the Bible, or fairy tales. Since 1980 the artist couple is standing for a sophisticated portrait art, situated between photography and painting, and breathing a touch of humanity into celebrities or magnificence into ordinary people. Inspired by the fine arts, cinema, and any kind of pop culture, the works by Pierre and Gilles are an attempt to reconcile different ages, genders and styles. Furthermore, they are justification for a fragile humanity where everyone may be an exceptional being. Directly referring to current world affairs, their works interrogate political issues through perfectly staged compositions as well as our critical thinking.
