Truly fascinating and totally unique, the work of the Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota is the perfect way to inaugurate the new exhibition space of the Parisian gallerist. In just a few years this discreet young woman has established herself in the artistic world, making a great breakthrough at the recent Art Basel fair. Alongside her large-scale installations created in situ, she also exhibits small “worlds” enclosed in glass boxes. Here, puppets, children’s dresses, spelled-out words, and other elements often associated with childhood, are captured in delicate webs of thread. In a way, they are smaller versions of her larger installations.

In this posthumous exhibition, Caro makes a strong come back. The pieces are rather recent […]. The others, in some cases less than two years old, breathe iron health. Force de la nature, Up a Note in oxidized steel and jarrah wood, dates from 2008-2009. It’s so imposing, so indicative of Caro’s ability to combine materials in a jubilant display of unexpected encounters, that we’re left stunned by the immoderation of a kind of gigantic, unruffled humanoid. Let’s also linger for a moment over Summit Games, in sandstone and steel, which reminds us that Caro, curious about everything, even explored terracotta at the invitation of his friend Chillida, two names that meet at the summit of universal and eternal sculptural art.
